For me personally, I have to go with Pit Boss. This comparison was done by Pit Boss so it may be a little biased, but it does a good job comparing two similar grills from each company.

With the Traeger, you get the latest bells and whistles, but you do pay extra for the brand name and marketing. You can fit a lot more cooking space into a smaller foot print. This makes the Pit Boss a great option if you need to fit it into a small space on your patio. I put this review together based on my experience cooking with the Pit Boss over the last several months.

The food cooked in the smoker has great flavor. They produce a perfect, ever so slightly blue smokealmost constantly in just the right amount. This smoker is no exception. Just fill the hopper with pellets, turn it on, and Bam! You are smoking and on your way to great tasting food. This is extremely common with probes that ship with smokers, so I tend to just use my Thermoworks Smoke to monitor temps instead. Otherwise the pros definitely outweigh any negatives.

I see the swings as being the same as what you would see on a manual wood smoker. The Pit Boss came tightly packaged with plenty of Styrofoam protection making it a little bit of a chore to get out of the box. You can use it like a wood oven for cooking pizzas, casseroles, or virtually anything else you can think of that would require higher temps. I empty the hopper and burn out the remaining pellets through the auger system every time I cook with it. These racks can be easily spaced out in the smoker box any way you desire.

So if you are cooking a large turkey you can create extra height, or if you want to pack in several slabs of ribs you can do that too. This unit utilizes one large simple display for relaying the smoker internal temperature and the meat probe temperature right next to the temperature control knob.

I would give the build quality a 4 out of 5 stars. I have used this smoker quite a bit now, and it is holding up well. Most things seem to be well made, sturdy, and a bit on the heavy side. The wood chips would only smoke for about minutes. So it would constantly need more wood. It was also extremely difficult to clean as many of the components were permanently mounted in the smoker and it was difficult to clean in all the crevices.

The Pit Boss is far easier to clean with all the components easily removable from the smoker box.

I really like this smoker. It produces great flavor along with that coveted smoke ring appearance. It has a very large food smoking capacity.

It requires minimal effort to use and only slightly more effort to clean. If you are a purist wanting to stoke your own fires, meticulously enforce your will on the smoker box temperatures, and sit and drink beer while enjoying your man vs smoker battle, then this smoker is probably not for you. And yes, you can still sit and drink beer while admiring your pellet smoker doing all the work. Have I mentioned how bad it sucks to unjam the auger? We noticed that you're using an ad-blocker, which could block some critical website features.

Pit boss vertical series 5 smoke setting. Dick Nitro Newbie.

Pit Boss 5-Series Vertical Pellet Smoker - 4.6 cu ft

New member here I've got a new pit boss series 5 vertical pellet smoker. My question pertains to the smoke setting on the temp controller should anyone know I've used other pit boss grills in the past which have the "P-setting" smoke temp option on them.

My vertical smoker has a smoke setting, but no "p" settings. However, it has lower temp setting starting at and goes up from there. I've tried the lower settings after using the manual specified startup procedure but I've gotten a flame out each time unless I use the smoke setting.

Does the smoke setting keep the heating element on no matter what to prevent the flame outs but the other settings do not? The smoke setting isn't a bad option, but it can be as low as f at the top while using this setting. All help is appreciated -Dick. I would call CS and ask them. They would have the best answer for you. I have the 4 the P setting is suppose to be used when you start it. Once you get the pot showing it is burning set your temp and preheat it.

Both units struggled to get over F in winter, but were good for my needs, sausage, jerky, fish, and pork are my main uses. I have been very happy with the size and vertical style of theses smokers, they suit my needs. The design has many of my wants in a manufactured smoker. First thing I noticed is how heavy the box is, I looked on the shipping label and found it weighs in at over 70 lbs.

Upon opening the box and removing everything, I found that the smoker itself is similar in weight to the other units, most of the weight is the integrated stand that comes with the unit. That is the first of the design features I really like. Not only does it come with a stand, the stand contains all of the working parts, leaving the whole smoker space for food. From the bottom up the stand contains the grease tray, the WATT burner, the chip tray, the digital controls, and the water pan.

Assembly needed! The stand and working parts are all packaged neatly in boxes inside of the smoking unit. Assembly is easy, but it will take some time. The instructions are OK, but not terrific. The final step of assembly is the four shelves, which are fully adjustable. This is the second great design feature. You can put the shelves individually at any height, the brackets can be moved up and down in about 1 inch steps, or removed altogether.

Now to plug it in. This smoker has some electric needs, no cheap extension cords are recommended. With everything powered up, I played a bit with the controls and the included meat probe. The panel has spots for two probes, but only one is included. I took it up to F with no trouble and left it there, it seemed locked in pretty good, the element came on as needed.Vertical pellet smokers take the convenience of pellet smoking and match it with the capacity and ease of vertical smokers.

They offer a completely different cooking experience to other types of pellet smoker, but are becoming more and more commonplace with big brands like Pit Boss, Camp Chef and Masterbuilt getting in on the action.

How to Smoke Chicken Wings - Pit Boss Vertical Smoker

But where to start? Check it out on Amazon. Want to smoke a lot of food at a time? Then perhaps consider buying the Pit Boss Grills 5. The highlight of this pellet smoker is its 1, square inches of total cooking area in 5 cooking racks. Not only is this thing high-capacity, but its cooking racks should serve you for a long time thanks to the porcelain enameling. What Pit Boss Grills also boasts is high pellet capacity.

You can load this thing with up to around 40 pounds of pellets and use the smoker for multiple sessions without refilling. Notably, Pit Boss Grills also boasts that 40 pounds of pellets will keep this thing going for around 24 hours! Check out our review of the Pit Boss FB. And in spite of its high capacity, this pellet smoker makes monitoring the cooking process easy due to the large viewing window.

Masterbuilt claims that this thing can take up to 12 chickens, 2 turkeys, 2 racks of ribs, or 3 pork butts. While this sounds impressive, for comparison, the Pit Boss Grills pellet smoker will probably take much more. For convenience, this pellet smoker has preset cooking and smoking cycles. If you want more flexibility though, this smoker allows you to control the cooking temperature along with smoking and cooking time.

There seem to be some quality control issues with this unit as well, so we suggest that you have a look at buyer reviews before making a purchase. The two pellet smokers look similar, but there are a few big differences that you may have been able to spot already. First and foremost, this pellet smoker has a front window for food viewing, which we think is a big advantage. Secondly, the MWS S smoker is larger and thus will take much more food.

More specifically, Masterbuilt claims that this smoker fits up to 16 chickens, 6 turkeys, 8 racks of ribs, or 8 pork butts. This is much more than with the MWS S. Other than these two differences, the two Masterbuilt pellet smokers appear to be identical.

Unfortunately, this also applies to the quality control issues the other unit had. Have a look at this smoker by Louisiana Grills then! With 6 porcelain-coated racks, this thing offers 2, square inches of total cooking area.

Aside from having a lot of room, the 6 racks will allow for more flexibility when it comes to food layout. The Louisiana Grills pellet smoker is also claimed to take up to 60 pounds of wood pellets, which should be enough for about 35 hours of cooking time. Of course, when dealing with such a huge pellet smoker, you can forget about storage efficiency.

The most notable thing about this smoker is the variety of cooking racks included — you get standard racks, jerky smoking racks, and one hanging rack with a dozen sausage hooks. Capacity-wise, this thing seems to be close to the Pit Boss Grills smoker. Nearly a third of its height is legs, which arguably is a waste of space. The temperature here also goes from degrees to only degrees Fahrenheit.

This will be perfectly acceptable for many people, but the lower temp limit makes this smoker unsuitable for some high-temperature cooking techniques. Learn how to season a vertical smoker. Help with temp setting on Pit Boss electric smoker. Hello all, My uncle gave me a nearly new Pit Boss vertical electric smoker the other day.

He only used it twice but couldn't get the temp right and doesn't want to mess with it. So I figured he was just not following the instructions, and fired it up this morning. I loaded up the chip tray, filled the water pan and fired it up.

It will hold what it says is a steady temp. I set it on and according to the reading on the LED screen, it held it steady. So I added a rack of baby backs. Opening the door at the 30 minute mark, I noticed that it didn't seem very hot. I plugged in the temp probe and put it on the top rack to check and it was onlywhile the LED read I had to crank it all the way up to its max setting to get the temp on the top rack to reach Now, I use the "smoke" button which manually turns on the element.

To get the temp to read on the top rack, the LED is reading Is this common? If so, these things seem like a lot of hassle. Any help or tips from experienced folks would be greatly appreciated. Inscrutable Smoking Fanatic. I have the 3-series analog version Use a good third-party temp probe. I crank it to max to preheat, then back it down based on my Inkbird.
