Musical toys are great developmental tools for kids. Read more here. Start with your two smallest tubes and use a rubber band to fasten them together. Put the rubber band around one tube, twist it so it makes a figure 8 and put the other loop around the next tube.
Hold them in place and put another rubber band around the two tubes the same way. Then, add the next biggest tube using the same method with the rubber bands. Next, use your yarn, ribbon, or embroidery floss to weave in and out of your xylophone tubes for decoration. You could paint them, color on them with markers or crayons, add stickers — get creative! Our favorite? Silly straws!

They are the most requested activities by my oldest son. So when I saw this DIY xylophone by Caroline at De tout et de rienit was just a matter of time before we tackled the project.
You'll need a set of wrenches. Most sets come with 10, but you'll only need nine. Give the biggest wrench to someone you know that's handy. To lower the price, purchase a smaller set and make a miniature version. Pipe insulation tubing. This stuff is like a skinny pool noodle but is already scored down the middle on one side.

I originally wrote this post on DIY musical instruments a few years ago, so I thought I would share it again — as it really is a classic kids activity.

In fact, I am trying very hard to pick up knitting once again and when I say once again, I mean from when I was about 8 years old. The kids have also found themselves creating a lot more.

The boys have always loved to dance or run with their arms flailing to music, but have only just begun to show an interest in creating the music themselves. With a looooonnnng winter ahead, I thought it would be a good idea to stock up on some ideas for homemade musical instruments.
And well, I kinda got carried away …. So I bring you:. Rhythmic Shaker — this was the activity that started the fascination with DIY musical instruments for my boys. A classic really, but with a neat twist.

Another great way to use up those plastic Easter Eggs. A whole class set would be simple to whip up. Rainstick by FSPDT — I used a rainstick in my Kindergarten classroom as a way of getting little ones attention and preparing them for transitions — but it also makes a unique homemade musical instrument! It is a common part of orchestras and marching bands, and though professional xylophones are expensive instruments, you can make your own simple xylophone out of glass. A glass xylophone allows you to experiment with tone and rhythm without spending a lot of money. Scrub out six identical glass bottles using a nylon brush. If they are not identical, they should be as close together in size as possible. Glass tumblers and glass jars are good choices for a glass xylophone. Fill each glass container with a different amount of water, with the smallest amount to the right and the largest amount to the left.
Tap each glass lightly with the side of a metal spoon. Note that as you go from right to left, the tones get progressively lower. Play the xylophone by tapping the glasses with the spoon. Share It. Things You'll Need.

This is a simple shaker made out of seeds, rice, beans, or beads placed in a film canister, pill bottle, or small tin box. The shaker can be used alone or with other DIY instruments to create the perfect percussion ensemble! This is one of the easiest homemade instruments to make and only requires a few materials.
It really does sound like rain! This particular rainmaker has two settings — tin roof and tropical rain forest. The glass xylophone has a beautiful ring to it. Castanets are a classic Spanish percussion instrument, and you can come pretty close to mimicking them with spoons.
This substitution does not resonate as well as the wooden box, so we recommend getting one of those if you can. A box harp is a pretty cool little invention. Because of its size, you can get some nice resonance out of it. You can even make a more advanced version if you have the extra material. This one is a little tricky. When done right, it can sound pretty close to a real trumpet! Although the video has sub-par quality, you can clearly hear the trumpet playing in action.
Every DIY instrument list has to include some kind of drum. This is a very easy, yet super effective homemade instrument. Not to mention, the low amount of materials needed means you can make a ton of these! If you get really good at it, you can actually play a lot of interesting melodies. Enough practice will eventually lead you to being able to play entire songs! This is another simple and portable option. The comb harmonica is one of the most fun homemade musical instruments you can make!
The wrench xylophone is a bit of magic.You might begin your project with a visit to the local lumber yard or wood craft store. Honduran Rosewood is by far the most favored choice for bar fabrication although other hardwoods such as cardinal wood or purpleheart hardwood will provide suitable, less expensive alternatives for this first project.
Gather together a collection of scrap hardwoods and tap on them to evaluate their initial tone. Listen for brightness or darkness of tone, how fast the hardwood responds, and most importantly its ability to sustain a tone. The bar dimensions provided here are for building a xylophone with a range extending from C4-A5. Bar lengths are as follows:. After all the blanks are cut to size, choose a medium grit sandpaper to take off the sharp edges and corners.
The nodal point for the fundamental pitch is the point at which the bar should be drilled for a positioning rod. The nodal point is With the undercut made, it is in a sense lengthened. Therefore, an accurate placement of the drilled hole will need to be a little closer to the end of the bar.
With the fundamental nodal points calculated and the hole for the positioning post drilled, the arch can now be cut. Begin by sketching the arch on the side of each bar with the ends of the arch ending slightly before the nodal points at each end of the bar.
Xylophone bars have a shallow arch. The illustration below should serve as a model for shaping the arch of each bar effectively. The initial shaping of the underside of the bar can be managed with a bandsaw. The rest of the undercut shaping is best left to a power sander. Keep in mind as you are fine tuning the bar that the fundamental pitch is most affected by removing wood in the middle of the arch. If in fine tuning the fundamental pitch you remove too much wood, which drops the pitch past the desired frequency, simply sand a little off both ends of the bar see example below.
This procedure will keep the bar balanced and able to respond with a consistent vibration throughout the bar. It is the interaction of the two ends and the flexibility of the center of the bar that produces the fundamental pitch. Work carefully and the pitch will return to the desired frequency.
When fine tuning the upper harmonics, sanding at the ends of the arch is required. Fine tuning of harmonics will be a challenge at first but will be a worthwhile pursuit. For this project the tuning of the octave above the fundamental should serve as a sufficient goal. After the fundamental has been tuned, attention may be turned to tuning the overtone.
To find the overtone, turn your xylophone mallet around and tap the bar with the handle while holding the bar at its nodal point. The octave may have to be tuned by ear if it does not register on the tuner.
Sanding at both ends of the arch will bring the pitch down. Make sure to be mindful of the fundamental pitch, as it too may be affected by the sanding process. The xylophone box may be manufactured from hardwood, pine or plywood. If you choose to work with plywood, search for a lumberyard in your area that sells 5 or 7 ply furniture grade plywood with a thin laminate on both sides.
